Environmental enrichment

Dr Jnanee Krishnasamy

Environmental enrichment means improving the pets’ environment in order to improve their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. In turn, this can reduce stress and improve behaviour.

Environmental enrichment allows pets to show natural behaviours

Examples of environmental enrichment in cats include:

  • Providing toys
  • Providing things to explore
  • Using puzzle feeders
  • Providing climbing opportunities
  • Providing places to hide

Examples of environmental enrichment in dogs include:

  • Providing toys
  • Using puzzle feeders
  • Providing chews and chew toys
  • Allowing sniffing and scents eg on walks or in the house
  • Listening to music
