Periodontal disease
Periodontal disease
This term refers to inflammation and damage to the tooth and tissues that support the tooth (including the gums, periodontal ligament, and the bone that forms the tooth socket) due to bacteria in the mouth. The bacteria forms a coating over the teeth, known as plaque, which over time becomes mineralised tartar. Eventually, damage to the tissues that keep the tooth in place lead to pain, infection, and/or tooth loss.
